Expertise

Peter Vedel Kessing, Ph.D., LLM, is senior researcher (assessed qualified as professor in international law, 2017 and 2020) at the Danish Institute for Human Rights. He is member of the UN Torture Committee and member of the Danish National Preventive Mechanism (OPCAT) visiting places of detention in Denmark.

Peter is specialised in and has published extensively on the prohibition of torture, police and prisons, armed conflict, counter-terrorism and human rights. He has since 1997 worked with international projects on prevention of torture and inspection of places of detention in several countries in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

In addition, Peter has been Chief Counsellor in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of International Law and Human Rights; Head of the International Law Department at the Danish Reed Cross; Legal adviser in DIGNITY working with international projects on prevention of torture; worked as a judge in a Danish district court, and with international asylum- and refugee law in the Danish Ministry of Interior, for the UNHCR and as a member of the Danish Refugee Appeals Court.
